Of Regrets and Resolutions

Resolutions are a strange thing.  The new year feels full of promise and hope, but for me it seems like most things are left undone, hanging, incomplete.

I realize it is a process, but most of the time my resolutions are way too grand in scale for me to accomplish, like the losing 10 pounds in 6 weeks of 2012 failure.

Or a procrastination so long that I didn't even set any goals.  There's one way to not fail; just don't try at all!  Win-win, right?

And I titled 2010's post "A goal without a daily plan of action is just a wish."  A great thought, and my goals were mighty small that year, so could be an accomplishment.  We were really struggling with some decisions and issues, and I'm pretty sure that I didn't want to be too specific.  Way too scary for me.

2009 saw me working on the same goals as 2008.  What's the definition of insanity?  Oh, yeah, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.  It's the story of my life.  I go back 4 years and I'm seeing a definite pattern of un-greatness and lack of motivation.  Especially this quote from that post:  I rarely tell others my dreams, goals, and wishes. Then I feel the pressure to be accountable for working towards or achieving those things. Who wants to be accountable? Not I!

And finally, back to 2008, I was really ambitious and broke down my goals by category.  Ack!  I do like the last quote, though, "I will appreciate what little progress I make despite my shortcomings."
 I
One of my favorite talks from this past conference was President Uchtdorf's talk "Of Regrets and Resolutions".  A few of my favorite quotes:
No matter our circumstances, no matter our challenges or trials, there is something in each day to embrace and cherish. There is something in each day that can bring gratitude and joy if only we will see and appreciate it.

One day we will take that unavoidable step and cross from this mortal sphere into the next estate. One day we will look back at our lives and wonder if we could have been better, made better decisions, or used our time more wisely.

To avoid some of the deepest regrets of life, it would be wise to make some resolutions today. Therefore, let us:
  •  Resolve to spend more time with those we love.
  •  Resolve to strive more earnestly to become the person God wants us to be.
  •  Resolve to find happiness, regardless of our circumstances.
I think those last three resolutions are perfect to focus on.  I will continue working on other goals, including finding a job, building food storage, being a better mom, and everything else I'm continuously working on!

And when you ask how my resolutions are going, please excuse the snort of laughter!

Just Pin It!

What is Pinterest?  Well, here is one person's definition.  To me, it is a virtual bulletin board; an online, streamlined, takes-up-no-space  version of the file folder stuffed with torn out magazine pages.  It is a recipe book, eye candy, scrapbook idea board, fashion magazine, and interior design firm all wrapped up in one.

Here are some things that I've "pinned" on my boards this week:

Lined Canvas Bins (from Diaper Boxes!)

5 minute Artisan Bread

Creamy Avocado Pasta

Mentally Training for a Race

DIY Mason Jar Herb Garden

The most pinned item from my blog is the Bread Pudding in a Jar post from last year.

To say that Pinterest is addicting is an understatement.  Here is a great overview/tutorial by Tesa from 2Wired2Tired.  If you haven't joined in and want an invitation, comment on this post and I'll e-mail you back with an invitation.

You can find me on pinterest here:  Annie Savor This Moment .  Happy Pinning!

When all else fails, give a gift card!

I am not a shopper. I go to a store with a list in hand and usually get what is on the list. So Christmas and birthday shopping throws me for a loop.

In the past few years gift cards have made an explosion. I can't go through a line in the grocery store without seeing a dozen different gift cards in a dozen different denominations for purchase hanging on the rack beside me.  Gone are the days of buying a "gift certificate" anymore, unless it is at a local mom & pop type story that doesn't use a gift card.

I have to say that gift cards have made my shopping just a bit easier.  Natalia needs a birthday gift for a friend?  We get a Jamba Juice gift card, stick it in an insulated Jamba Juice reusable cup, fill it with M&M's, and we have a cute little (consumable!) gift.

Brian wants music for his birthday?  itunes or Best Buy, Amazon, or even a Wal-Mart gift card.  These are cute packaged with a set of speakers for the MP3 player or ipod.

Give the gift of a Sonic gift card in a decorated 4-pack drink holder with other little gifts or snacks included.  Perfect for happy hour!  Chocolate Cherry Diet Coke, anyone?

Restaurant gift cards are a great gift, especially when sending a gift long distance.  Gift cards cost very little to send.  Pop the gift card into a greeting card and mail!

When we lived in Missouri I bought most of my gas at the local Wal-Mart store.  If I used a gift card to pay for it there was a 3-cent discount.  Every penny counts, and I would almost always get the gift card to get the discount.

Since being involved in SocialMoms I have earned enough Amazon gift cards to buy myself a birthday present:  a Blendtec Wheat Grinder that I've had on my wish list for some time.  I love it!  And I love that I could buy it with my gift cards, and no money out of pocket.

Gift cards have definitely put a different spin on shopping for me, and I have to say it has been a positive spin!

Frustration...

If you are reading this post, I'm not sure how you actually found it.  That's because my domain I bought from GoDaddy.com has expired, the e-mail address I used when I bought it two years ago is obsolete, so I didn't get any "Hey, dummy, your website is about to expire so pay us already" messages, and the day it expired someone bought the domain out from under me.  Why????  I'm thinking it's because they want me to have to pay them a huge amount of money to get my domain back.  So now all of my posts that I've linked to other blogs and websites are obsolete.  No one can find me when they click on those links.  Everything I've done in the past two years has been done using the domain, not the blogspot address that this shows now.  So if you're looking for me and actually found me, THANK YOU!

And my hubby spent 20 minutes on the phone with the GoDaddy guy trying to get this all figured out. Thanks, dear.  You're a gem.

So I'm going to try to get my domain back.  Wish me luck.

It's the final countdown...

do-do-do-do, do-d-do-do-do!  It really is the final countdown, only four weeks until school starts back up.  It's a vicious cycle; waiting for summer vacation, then anticipating the start of the school year.   Here are some of my best tips for getting back into the swing of things and surviving the school year.

  • Be Prepared!  It not only works for Boy Scouts, but for being ready for the school year, too!  Get the supply list for your child's class as soon as possible and shop the ads for school supplies.  Having a Master Lock ready for the locker or paper and pencils for the new desk can boost their confidence on the first day of school.  If there is a sale on facial tissue, stock up!  Joe's class ran out last year.  Mostly because he had a cold for half of it.
  • Be Informed!  Bring your calendar and notebook with you on back-to-school night.  Trust me on this one.  My hubby decided to sign me up on some committees, and I didn't find out about it until I got e-mail notices for meetings.  Most teachers have their year pretty well mapped out in advance.  Jotting down the dates for the 100th day party, the Friendship Feast and the class play will make it easier to plan around and get time off of work to participate.
  • Be Brave!  Bring the checkbook.  Chances are you are going to have to pay for P.E. uniforms, ASB cards, and countless other things that will add up to a small fortune.
  • Be Involved!  Get to know your child's teachers.  Chat with their classmate's parents.  A little bit of friendliness goes a long way.
  • Be Available!  The hardest thing at our house is to get a child who has been in school for 8 hours to want to do his/her homework.  We have some down time after school, then try to get the homework done while dinner is being prepared.  That way I can help when help is needed and not be peeking over their shoulder the whole time.  Most schools have grades available on-line, so keeping tabs on whether homework is getting done/turned in is fairly easy.
  • Be Calm!  And carry on.  Sometimes that's all we can do.

I wrote this post to enter a contest for a Master Lock back-to-school prize pack as a member of the Mom Bloggers Club.   All opinions are my own!

Top Ten reasons I'd love to visit Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach is located smack in the middle of the east coast, the Atlantic Ocean, and in the South.  Three places that I have never been.  But I could visit it all in one fell swoop by going to Virginia Beach!

Here are my Top Ten Reasons I'd Love To Visit Virginia Beach:

10.  Virginia Beach.  It has BEACH in the name.  Really, what more can I say.

9.  Miles of pristine beaches, state parks, wildlife trails, and meandering waterways. (from the website)
We'd love to visit the Fishermans Island National Wildlife Refuge.

8.  Like I said above, I've never been to the East Coast.  Ever.  I have been to almost every state from Wisconsin and Missouri over to California and Oregon, but not east of the Midwest. (Have I confused you yet?)   I've always wanted to go to the East Coast in the fall, too, to see the fall colors, and visiting the beaches of Virginia Beach would be an amazing bonus!

7.  My hubby and the kids would love to do some fishing there! We haven't been fishing in forever, and Andy and the boys really enjoy it!

6.  We are history buffs and would love to show the kids some of America's founding history, like the lighthouses at Cape Henry, or retrace the footsteps of our forefathers at First Landing State Park, or call the notable Adam Thoroughgood House home for the day.

5.  Real Chesapeake Bay, Atlantic Ocean seafood!  Yum!  Fresh seafood at the local restaurants, and the seashore to eat it by.

4.  Free beaches!  Not the same as the "free" (nude) beaches here on the west coast.  The 3 beaches at Virginia Beach are no cost, not even for parking.  What a deal!

3.  Strawberries.  Virginia Beach produces more strawberries than any other Virginia city. And we sure do love strawberries! And strawberry shortcake, and strawberry pie, and strawberries and cream, and strawberry smoothies, and just plain old fresh strawberries and sugar.

2.  Virginia Beach features a fireworks show twice a week through the summer, not only for Independence Day.  Sounds pretty cool, right? The kids--and the parents--would really enjoy that!

1.  According to Monkey, the beach is where Heavenly Father lives.  So I'm thinking that Virginia Beach would be pretty heavenly.  How much more could we ask for?

If I ever do get that trip to the East Coast, Virginia Beach is on my short list for sights to see and relaxation.

What do you do in the summertime...

With the lazy, hazy, and sometimes crazy days of summer upon us, we’re always looking for something to fill those hours of down time we tend to have.  I can’t make the kids do word problems and read books all the time, when they are not swimming or riding their bikes, that is.  So it’s fun to look for something else, something new that will give us plenty of enjoyment.

A website that has really impressed me with the interesting toys and games they carry is ebeanstalk.com.  Their online store is not full of the same-old/same-old things, but has a huge variety of toys, games and books.  One of the games we have put on our wish list is the No Stress Chess game.  When we were still in Missouri the two younger boys were learning to play chess from their Uncle Kyle, so this would be a great way to reinforce that and keep them going.  I'm big into learning toys.  Why not learn, or work on, a skill while playing a game or with a toy?

There are so many ways to narrow your search when looking for toys children love:  You can search by a child's age, by price if you are working with a specific budget, and by category of toy, or by the skill that you might want to teach or reinforce.

Most sites have product reviews. ebeanstalk reviews happen before a product makes it on their site. Their team of child-experts looked at, tested and selected only the best toys. Then, they matched the toys to a child’s stage of development. Then they custom write an instruction card for each and every toy. This is the ebeanstalk review process. No other site does this; not even close. By conducting the review ahead of time, they ensure that their toys are the best and are matched to a child’s stage of development.

The baby toy section has everything imaginable, including a Resource Guide for Baby Toys & Child Development, including short, cute videos with adorable babies like this one:

Whatever you do this summer, make it a great one, with lots of family time.  What better way to do it than to play together?

This post was sponsored by ebeanstalk.com.  The opinions expressed are all my own.  I'm very opinionated, you know. ;)

Ten time-saving tips to make your life as a busy mom easier

A friend that I’ve had since I was a teen-y-bopper called yesterday.  We agreed with each other that we have been really, really, busy.  We are not sure what we have been so busy with, but it has taken up all of our time so far this summer.

The problem is that I have a love/hate relationship with organization.  I love the idea of being ultra-organized, but I hate the whole process of it.  It means I try {yes, I really do try!} to keep some organized chaos to our days.  Another problem is that I love the idea of having a laid-back, easy-breezy, ham and cheezy summer.  I want to let the kids swim when they want, I want them to read books, create art or anything else they want to try their hand at, and I want the days to just ebb and flow.  Then reality sets in.

Here are ten time-saving tips to make your life as a busy mom easier:

Meal Planning:  I try to make a menu on Sunday afternoons for that week.  I keep track of what I have on hand in my pantry, fridge, and freezer, and try to plan my grocery shopping and menu all at once.  Then I try to do my grocery shopping on Monday.  I try to keep the afternoon free to put everything away, brown the meat and chop veggies.  I like to get a jump on the food prep so I can put a meal together quickly.

Grocery Shopping:  This goes along with meal planning, but I wanted to add a little bit more.  I love to plan my menu and shopping by first using the ads.  I look for things that I regularly use, go through my coupons and put them in some sort of order, and make my list by store.  I have a notebook that I jot down the prices of things I regularly buy, and I also have a maximum amount that I will pay for something; for example, I won’t buy fruit for more than $1/lb.  If it is more expensive then it is probably not in season and not worth buying.  I always check the per unit or per ounce price on the shelf tags, too.

Piggy-backing Errands:  My bank is in one of the grocery stores, so I try to do my banking at the same time.  The kids have youth activities and Scouts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so going into town early on those evenings and picking up forgotten items at the grocery market happen then.

10-Minute (or 10-Things) Pick-up:  When I was growing up, mom would hold a “10-minute pick-up” which meant that we had to work on the house for ten minutes, putting things away where they went and doing a general straightening.  I remember groaning about it back then, and now when I holler out “Ten Minute Pick Up!” my kids groan about it now.  But it’s amazing how great the house can look after just 10 minutes of everyone pitching in together!

Clean in the Morning:  Lets face it, most of the summer the temperature may be hot, hot, hot!  Another thing that I learned from my mom is to get the housework done in the morning when it is cooler in the house and cooler outside.  Then I won't feel guilty when we lounge in the pool or head to the library for the afternoon since the work is already done.

Keep the Calendar Updated:  I don't know how many times the peeps in our home have forgotten about an upcoming appointment, event, etc.  I try to write everything on the calendar, even if it's just a little note to remember which garbage can to put out on the curb (green or blue).  My sister Emily is great at this, and I am getting better.  I've even started writing down what we're having for dinner, so when that question inevitably comes from one of my four darling chilren I can say, "Look at the calendar!"

Be a List-Maker:  List-making is part of my love/hate relationship with organization.  I try to keep a running to-do list so I don't have to dig too deep into my own brain to remember what it is I'm supposed to be remembering.  I have a small notebook that I keep in my purse with my purse-sized calendar (which I try to keep updated and coordinated with my on the fridge calendar) to jot down an epiphany as it occurs.  If a minute or two goes by my brain is diluted enough to forget that an important thought ever hatched there.  I also keep a post-it note pad by my computer to jot down important information, like a reminder that Baskin Robbins has 99 cent scoops on Tuesday nights.

Keep the Laundry Rolling:  In a household with a softball player, a football player, swimmers and a now shedding dog, I've got laundry going constantly.  At least it seems like it is.  One way to keep up with it is to make sure I put a load in first thing in the morning.  If that means that my hubs has no water pressure for his morning shower, so be it.  He should have gotten up before I did.  The early bird gets the water.  I also use TV as a bribery to get the laundry folded.  If the kids want to watch a show or a movie, then they must be folding the laundry whilst they watch.  It's a win-win for me.

S.Q.U.I.R.T.:  Super Quiet Uninterrupted Reading Time is our summer reading program.  The kids have to read for 30 minutes per dayWe are participating in the library's reading program, as well as Barnes and Noble.  Keeping the kids reading through the summer goes a long way to keeping them up to speed when school starts again!

Schedule Down Time:  If the days are getting away from us, I like to schedule a little bit if down time.  Maybe it's just taking an afternoon to do nothing, or heading to the park with a picnic.  Whatever it is, I don't let it get me stressed.

I'm looking forward to the summer {I think!} and using these ideas will hopefully make it gravy.

Something new...

This is a family blog.  Most of my writing and posting is just a little of this and that, and I've stayed away from giveaways (not that I wouldn't want to give anything away to ya'll!  I love everyone that takes the time to read anything that comes out of my scattered brain.)  I haven't taken on sponsorships or really done reviews or anything else, and the only advertising links I have on here are for a Pre-Paid Legal and Identity Theft Shield service since we are affiliated with the company.

And of course, there's my little Etsy shop, where I justify spending time creating stuff.

Now I'm so excited to find Broadcast Bloggers, which is a company that will match bloggers with brands or businesses who want honest opinions written about their products or services.  I'm really psyched about it.

Is "psyched" still a word?

Anyway, here is an example of a blogpost done by one of the Broadcast Bloggers, Tara from Dandy Giveaways.  She reviewed these nifty KidSwitch glow-in-the-dark light switch extender.  What a great product idea!  (Must have been invented by a mom.)

So go check out Broadcast Bloggers and let me know what you think!  I'll let YOU know what I think, too.  Here's hoping it's something great!

Party Time!

Ultimate Blog Party 2011+

Yep, it's that time again! If you're here visiting from the Ultimate Blog Party, let me introduce myself.

Hi, I'm Annie. Nice to meetcha! I'm married to Andy and we have 4 kids, from 7 to 16, and a lot of what I write about has to do with them! {Click on the "Who Am I" tab right above here to read a bit more.}

I started blogging in 2007 to keep family and friends up-to-date while we were living in Missouri. Since then we have moved back to California. My blog is also where I keep track of things our family has done and said. The blogname Savor This Moment is a reminder to me to live in the moment, and to really be there.

I also blog about scrapbooking, {which I adore!} and share some of my pages and other projects here.

Since I have to cook for my family anyway, and we love to eat, you'll find quite a few recipes here, too.

Leave a comment! I love finding other blogs to read, and I can't wait to visit YOU!

I'm Baa-aack...

Well, maybe kinda back.  I've been neglecting the blog for quite a while now, since I've been trying to focus on some things that need to get done around this joint.

So, just a couple of things...
If you have come to visit because you received a Christmas card in the mail from our family, I sincerely apologize if you had to pay 20 cents for the privilege to do so.  Shame on me.  I ordered the cards and didn't know they would require extra postage!  If I am blessed by being able to see you in the near future, feel free to request a refund in that amount.  If you chose not to pay, here is the picture of the kids that made the cut.  Enjoy!

2.  In the hopes that I can shed some of the poundage that I've gained since leaving the farm, Natalia and I have started an exercise program at home.  We are both going to use it for a Personal Progress goal, too.  And I have also given  up baking.  I know, I'm addicted.  And Andy begs for someone to make cookies every night.  But it has done him good...he's dropped almost ten pounds already!  Me?  I'm down 1.  Yeah, a whopping 1 pound.  Yay me!

3.  There is another teenager in the house.  That and a little bit more drama.  One thing about kids, they get older every day.  Unfortunately, I get older every day along with them.

4.  We're planning another budget birthday bash, this time a Pirate Party.  I'll share some of the ideas and links later.  Monkey chose a pirate theme, and luckily Dollar Tree had a whole set of pirate party gear.

5.  Bri's hitting Sweet Sixteen.  At least I'm hoping he gets a little sweeter!  I'm not prepared for the ramifications of 16.  Dating, Driving, Deviance.  You know what I mean.   From Christmas on, it's celebration central here since three of the kids have birthdays within 34 days.  Whew.  Then we're done for a while, until September.

6.  We had baseball and softball tryouts.  So fun to watch the kids have a ball with it!  Joe has really missed not playing baseball, and he is chomping at the bit to get back on the diamond.  We have a great park here in town with baseball diamonds, so we'll be spending some family time down there practicing.

Hope all is well in your world!
I'll blog back at you soon.  Pinky swear.

I'm hopping to some blogs...

One thing about this little ol' internet:  There are tons of blogs to read!  It's like reality TV, but without having to eat bugs or vote people off.  Not that I'm opposed to either of those, just in the proper context.

In looking for some quality blogs, I've decided to join in on a blog hop hosted by Nicole at One Little Mister.  Her blog is family friendly and lots of fun.  It's easy to tell that she takes pride and spends some time on it!

So I'll be off doing some visiting.  You can tag along if you want!

Madsen bike contest...

Madsen Cycles Cargo Bikes

Isn't this the coolest bike EVER!

Of course, she should be wearing a helmet.

I wonder if they make bike helmets for dogs?

I'll be right back, I'm going to google that and I'll let you know what I find out.

And holy helmet, here it is.

I can't stop grinning!

OK, back to what I was REALLY posting about...

Madsen is having a contest, and they're giving away one of these bikes.  LOVE it!

I'll be wishing I had one of these bikes today while we're at the Salmon Festival.  That way I can eat all I want at the salmon bake, and let one of my kids tote me around.

Personalized Holiday Cards

I have to admit that in the past few years I've been TERRIBLE with sending Christmas cards, birthday cards, any holiday cards.  You name it and I haven't sent it.

When I think about personalized cards, it's really easy for me to get way complicated with a design:  handmade, with lots of froo froo and sparkles. Then I get overwhelmed and decide to not even bother with it.

But personalized can actually mean something as easy as:
1. Adding a photo of the kids, cats, dogs, yourself, whatever.
2. A hand-written note to the recipient, even just a few words jotted down in your own actual chicken scratch handwriting.  Shows you care!
3. Have the kids draw a picture or illustration and turn that into a card. You can either use it as it is, or copy and size it onto cardstock  and fold to make a card.  This would work great for ANY holiday.  I've also used my kids own drawings for thank-you notes.  Grandparents especially love these, of course.
4. Instead of a regular folded and sealed in an envelope, send a postcard!  Design it on the computer and print onto sturdy cardstock and trim to a standard postcard size to use the postcard postage.
5. Get the whole family involved!  Have each family member contribute SOMETHING to the card; maybe design an element, create a poem for the inside, choose the font, pick out the perfect photo, and whatever it is that they've contributed, they'll get the satisfaction of knowing that a friend or family member will receive and enjoy that card.

I headed on over to Purple Trail to see what it was all about.  On the top of the website there are three steps to making your own personalized card:
1. Pick a design   2. Customize your design   3. Order, Print, or E-mail.  It's as easy as 1-2-3.

Plus, they are offering, For a limited time,

FREE shipping on all Holiday Cards prints!

Holy cow, I might have to send some cards this year.  I know I've put it in writing here, so I guess I've got to give it the ol' college try.

Visit Purple Trail's website and design your own card.  Give it a whirl.  They make it a cinch!

The Mom Bloggers Club is giving away $100 gift code to Purple Trail for Personalized Holiday Cards.  How cool would that be to win?

Find the contest information right here!

Chocolate...

It's no secret that I love chocolate in any form.  I especially adore dark chocolate, and it seems like the more bitter the more I adore it.  When Andy wants to surprise me with a little something, it usually includes a Hershey's Special Dark bar.  Yum.  I have to ration it, and freeze it, so I can break a chunk off and let it melt slowly in my mouth.  Holy cow, my mouth is watering right now!

I know it may come as a shock to some of you, as it has to me, (actually, when I dwell on it my heart beats just a little faster because I am so not ready for it) but Halloween is just around the corner.

That's right, it is 2 weeks and 3 days away.  If you're counting.  Or want to be reminded.

Since we are in a new town, I'm not sure about how much candy we'll be giving out, but I heard rumor that most of the population congregates in one particular neighborhood, which isn't ours, to do their trick-or-treating.

That said, I really should have some candy on hand, just in case.

The Mom Bloggers Club is sponsoring a contest for it's members that includes a Hershey's Halloween Prize Pack, of which I am hoping to win one.  Because I love chocolate.  And nothing says chocolate like Hershey's.

A Post Title I am Proud Of...

I am not very creative when it comes to titling my blog posts, usually just giving a little blurb about what I'm writing about.  Which is exactly what this one is.

Fried Food and Chicken Poop

So, yesterday I made an 8 hour round-trip drive with Andy. Well, 3/4 of the drive was with Andy and the other 1/4 I drove a mini-van back to his place of employment. This drive was made in the afternoon and evening, so the kids arrived home on the bus from their place of education. When they left for said place of eduction that morning, I didn't know that I would be gone when they came back to the home-base, so I didn't have dinner made for them.

Their Auntie Tara (sometimes know as Auntie Booby) came over and made cookies with Nattie, so I called her up to tell her that the kids could cook up some hamburgers and throw some salad on their plate and call it good. She took me up on it, and when Andy and I arrived at home-base the smell of fried food hit us like a brick when we opened up the door.

Andy's way to solve the problem of the smell was to open up the window in our bedroom. Whoa. Fried meat is not pleasant. The chicken barns are not pleasant. Add them together and you have downright biological warfare possibilities. I'm thinking about bottling it and contacting the Pentagon. There are possibilities here, I'm telling you.

The SITS girls are hosting a week long Back to Blogging event, with a washer and dryer set as a prize!

The contest is sponsored by Standards of Excellence, Westar Kitchen and Bath, and Florida Builder Appliance.

A post I wish more people had read...

Let's face it, a day doesn't go by that I wish my children would listen to me.  I feel a teensy bit the same way in my blogging world, too.  It's not that I need a pat on the back for what I write, and I don't mean to get on my soapbox, but a little bit of affirmation is always a good thing.

The post that I wish more people had read, that I wish I could have sent to everyone in the ENTIRE USA, is this one.  I wrote it the day after election day in 2008, and I still remember the way my heart felt clenched up like a fist in my chest.  The words went straight from that clenched up heart and onto the computer screen, just as if I had a USB cable connecting the two.

God Bless America

After the election results last night, my little corner of the country was not celebrating. I wasn't doing a victory dance or high-fiving Andy. I sat and watched John McCain give a very touching, dignified and gracious concession speech, calling for the support of his victor. I sat and contemplated what Barack Obama's election to the highest office of our beautiful country means to me and to my family, my community, our state and the United States of America, and I'm worried.

Don't get me wrong, I have hope-

I have hope that everything will be OK, that the economy will turn around, gas prices will stay down, and that we can grow and prosper. I have hope that President-Elect Obama will do what is best for this country, and not bring us to a liberal, large government, "don't you worry, we'll take care of you now" mentality. I have faith that my Father in Heaven is watching out for me and for this choice country, for which our forefathers fought and brought to freedom so many years ago. I am grateful for a democracy in which everyone has a right to let his or her voice and choice be heard, and I hope the right choice was made.

I guess I will wait and see, just like the rest of the world. I will wait to see if Joe Biden's speculation that the rest of the world will test President Obama will be verified.

I will wait to see if he will reach across the party lines and try to work together with those he views as the enemy.

I will wait to see if he continues to include in the circle of his associates William Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, and others on the left fringe of politics. Maybe he will keep his distance from them. Maybe he has learned his lesson. Kind of like the straight-laced kid in school who likes to hang with the dangerous crowd. He got in trouble for it (although most people don't seem to care much who he surrounds himself by) and maybe he'll toe the line from now on.

But, like I said, I am hopeful. I'm hopeful that this will stay the land of the free and the home of the brave. And I hope that my doubts will be unfounded.

My first post...regurgitated.

The SITS girls are hosting a week long Back to Blogging event, with a washer and dryer set as a prize!

Since I am such a HorRIBly inconsistent blogger, I'm going to participate in Back to Blogging Day to get myself in the groove.  Goodness knows I don't have any kind of groove, not anything even resembling a groove, but maybe I'll get a little bit of a beat this week.

So, I'll start by regurgitating - uh, I mean revisiting - my very first blog post on April 25, 2007.  Wow, that seems so long ago!  There were no pictures because I didn't know how to load them yet, and I didn't have anything to write about, but I had two comments!  Woo-hoo!  My husband, who critiqued the post, and my friend who called him a stinker for critiquing my post.  It's been a fun, if often sporadic, journey since then.  Here it is, freshly regurgitated just for you:

Birds of a Feather...or the Early Bird gets The Worm!

I woke up before sunrise this morning to the most amazing sound of dozens of birds twittering back and forth to each other. I couldn't believe how loud they were! I'm not sure why they were all out there, but my best guess is they were after all the little wormies that might be above ground after the big storm last night.

We had lots of lovely thunder and lightning, had to even make sure the computers were all unplugged-just in case! My parents have had a couple of lightning issues with their computers in the past.

Emily had her house ready in case of frightened family hunkering down in her basement during the tornado watch until 2a.m. this morning. We didn't end up over there, but it's nice to know we have an alternative spot to the smelly basements of the Presbyterian or Baptist churches in town. Not that I wouldn't be happy to be in those basements in case of actual tornadic action, mind you!

Thought I'd take this early morning time to actually start my blog that I've been threatening to start for a while now. Also thought this could be a good way to keep in touch will those of you far away. Keep checking back! I want to update this often, and maybe I'll have some surprise guest bloggers on once in a while!

***It's me in real time again.  So, maybe I didn't keep the "I want to update this often", but I have had a guest blogger, my daughter "Nutella".  She writes a pretty good post, too.

So buh-bye for now, I'll be write back tomorrow!

My New Life

Stephanie is such an inspiration to me. I've followed her blog and her story since before her accident. Her family took care of her babies while she was in a coma for months. Brother Holland's words at the end of the video are so powerful. And Stephanie has survived the ultimate "trial by fire".
